Manta is an art installation designed and realized for the Facebook Canadian head office in Toronto. Manta symbolizes Facebook’s mission to make the world more open and connected. The shape is composed of more than 7 thousand pieces of clear acrylic glass that represents the more than 7 Billion people in the world in 2016. The pieces are connected to each other with more than 13 Thousand rivets. We used computation to skillfully model a mathematical surface that gives strength to material through its geometry—the 7000 geometrically different acrylic panels are only 2mm thick. Manta is a 3 cubic meter large artifact (110 cubic feet) which is self-supporting and weighs only 40 KG (88 pounds). In collaboration with Manuel Kretzer and Hans Sachs.
